  • WuXi PharmaTech Inc., a pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical-device research and development-outsourcing company with operations in China and the U.S., appointed Felix Hsu senior vice president of WuXi AppTec U.S. Hsu was director of heart valve worldwide marketing at Medtronic.
  • Evangelical Community Hospital, in Lewisburg, Pa., named Glenn R. Eisenhauer vice president of human resources. Eisenhauer was vice president of human resources at the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care in Little Rock. He replaces Michael Pierce, who retired last year.

  • Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp., a biopharmaceutical company, promoted Vojo Vukovic, M.D., to senior vice president and chief medical officer (CMO). Vukovic was vice president of clinical research.
  • Specialty pharmaceutical company Durect Corp. named Joseph Stauffer, M.D., CMO and executive vice president of corporate strategy. Stauffer was head of clinical research and medical affairs for pain products at Alpharma Inc.

  • Health Care Service Corp. (HCSC) promoted Carolyn Clift to senior vice president and chief diversity officer. Clift was vice president, general counsel and assistant secretary. HCSC operates the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
  • Medical imaging startup Imalux Corp. named Michael Burke CEO on June 1, replacing acting CEO Bill Sanford, who will continue as chairman. Burke was CEO of Trek Diagnostic Systems Inc.

June 18, 2009

  • McKesson Corp. promoted Patrick Blake to executive vice president and group president of its McKesson Technology Solutions unit. Blake was president of McKesson Specialty Care Solutions.
  • WellNet Healthcare, a technology company, appointed Chris Kaiser sales executive for the Mid-Atlantic territory and Jay Thompson sales executive for the Northeast territory. Kaiser was territory salesman at Vocus Inc., and Thompson was a research consultant at the Corporate Executive Board in Arlington, Va.

June 17, 2009

  • Universal Health Care in St. Petersburg, Fla., named Cheryl R. Shafer chief medical officer. Shafer was the national medical director at Optum Public Sector at OptumHealthcare Solutions in Charleston, W.Va.
  • St. Luke's Health System in Boise, Idaho, picked David Pate to take over as president and CEO after Ed Dahlberg steps down in March 2010. Pate is CEO of St. Luke's Episcopal Health System in Houston until he leaves in September.

  • Somerset Medical Center, in Somerville, N.J., named Stephen Minogue vice president of its Sleep For Life Center. He was vice president of support services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, N.J.
  • Cinergy Health, a vendor of health insurance benefit programs for the consumer market, appointed Erika Schwartz, M.D., medical director. Schwartz specializes in the treatment of bioidentical hormones.

  • Omnicare, Inc. promoted Jeffrey M. Stamps to senior vice president of pharmacy operations, Beth A. Kinerk to senior vice president of sales and customer development, and Jonathan D. Borman to vice president of strategic sourcing....Zosano Pharma Inc., a privately held pharmaceutical company, named Thorsten von Stein, M.D., chief medical officer (CMO). He was CMO at Tercica Inc.

  • ZymoGenetics, Inc. promoted Eleanor L. Ramos, M.D., to senior vice president and chief medical officer. Ramos was vice president of clinical development. She replaced Nicole Onetto, M.D...ScripNet named Candace Nolan director of sales. She was vice president of sales and marketing at Health Systems International.

  • OptumHealth Inc. appointed Paul Hebert chief operating officer of OptumHealth Specialty Benefits. He was vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of small and middle markets at Aetna Inc.
  • FivePrime Therapeutics, Inc. named Julia P. Gregory president and CEO, effective June 18. Gregory was executive vice president and CFO at Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. She succeeds Gail Maderis, who is stepping down for health reasons.

  • EmblemHealth named Shawn M. Fitzgibbon senior vice president of network management. He has served as president of HealthSpring of New York, and as an administrator at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Kappametrics Inc., a medical technology company, appointed Jay D. Miller president and CEO. He was an independent consultant for approximately 10 health care companies.

June 9, 2009

  • Sarnova Medical Products, a distributor of health care products in the emergency medical services and respiratory markets, appointed Hank Struik CEO. Struik was president of Cardinal Health, Inc. He replaces Craig Davenport, who is stepping down.
  • Redwood Regional Medical Group, in San Francisco, promoted Wayne Fairchild to CEO. Fairchild had been serving as interim CEO.

June 8, 2009

  • Carlos O. Hernandez, M.D., was named president at WellMed Medical Group, a large senior health care provider in San Antonio. Hernandez has been a physician leader at WellMed since 2001, serving as chief of medical affairs, medical director and lead physician.
  • Maine Medical Center promoted Richard Petersen to president and CEO. Petersen was interim president and CEO since Vincent Conti stepped down last year.

  • The University of Rochester Medical Center promoted Mark B. Taubman, M.D., to acting CEO. Taubman will serve as CEO until Bradford Berk, M.D., recovers from a spinal injury. Taubman was chair of the department of medicine.
  • Stevie Bosch joined CompPartners, a workers' compensation, disability, and group health managed care organization, as operations supervisor. She was the meeting manager/special projects at Continuing Medical Education, LLC.

June 4, 2009

  • Joseph Baker was named president of the Medicare Rights Center, effective June 15. Baker was a senior health policy adviser in the administrations of New York Govs. David Paterson (D) and Eliot Spitzer (D).
  • Blue Shield of California appointed Meredith Mathews, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer (CMO). Matthews replaced Alan Sokolow, M.D., who went to United Healthcare. Matthews was CMO at DaVita VillageHealth.

June 3, 2009

  • Brian Keller was promoted to senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Keller replaces Mike Reitz, who was named president and CEO. Keller was vice president for individual sales and marketing.
  • Memorial Hospital in Conway, N.H., appointed Scott McKinnon president and CEO. McKinnon was vice president at Lankenau Hospital in Pennsylvania.

June 2, 2009

  • HHS Sec. Kathleen Sebelius appointed Cindy Mann director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations, which oversees Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) at the federal level. Mann was director at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.
  • John H. Austin, M.D., 64, founder, executive chairman and chief medical officer of Oakland, Calif.-based Arcadian Management Services, was killed in an airplane accident on May 29.

June 1, 2009

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City said CEO Tom Bowser plans to retire at year-end 2010. Concurrently, the Blues plan promoted David Gentile to president and CEO-elect. Gentile was executive vice president.
  • BSD Medical Corp., a developer of systems used to deliver hyperthermia therapy for the treatment of cancer, appointed Steven Smith vice president of marketing and business development. Smith was director of business development at Bard Access Systems, Inc.

  • West Penn Allegheny Health System named Gary Strong president and CEO of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital-Forbes Regional Campus. Strong was executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Allina Health System in Minneapolis....Medsphere Systems Corp., a developer of open-source electronic health records, appointed Walter Groszewski vice president of business development. Groszewski was an IBM Corp. global sales executive.

  • Agios Pharmaceuticals appointed David Schenkein, M.D., CEO and Duncan Higgons chief operating officer (COO). Schenkein was senior vice president of clinical hematology/oncology at Genentech, Inc., and Higgons was COO, president and interim CEO at Archemix Corp.
  • Anika Therapeutics, Inc. named Frank J. Luppino COO. Luppino was vice president of operations at Bionostics.

  • Comprehensive Care Corp. appointed Clark Marcus chairman and co-CEO. Marcus was chairman and CEO at Core Corporate Consulting Group, Inc. before it was acquired by CompCare in January.
  • Hawaii Medical Center (HMC), which has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization since August, named Paul Ross and Michael Matwichy hospital administrators for its two hospitals. Ross will run HMC East in Liliha, and Matwichyna will oversee HMC West in Ewa Beach.

  • Connectyx Technologies Holdings Group, Inc. appointed William Carlson, M.D., chief medical officer. He was president of the medical staff at Martin Memorial Health Systems in Stuart, Fla., and a member of the board of directors.
  • Greyson International, Inc. named Daniel Ettedgui, M.D., director of medical products. Ettedgui is a practicing physician in Florida, specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

  • Independence Blue Cross appointed Alan Krigstein senior vice president and chief financial officer (CFO). He succeeds John Foos, who retired in November. Krigstein was senior vice president of finance, CFO and treasurer at AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Companies. Independence also promoted John Janney, Jr., to senior vice president of eBusiness and support services and Stephan Roker to senior vice president of operations.
  • Axolotl Corp., a developer of health information exchange tools and services, named Robert Scarbrough director of IT operations. He was vice president of IT at Swope Community Enterprise Services.

  • The Kansas Health Policy Authority promoted Andrew Allison to acting executive director. Allison was deputy director. He succeeded Marcia Nielsen, who stepped down to accept a faculty position at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
  • New York City named Thomas Farley head of its Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene. Farley was a pediatrician and epidemiologist in Louisiana. Farley replaces Thomas Frieden, who was picked last week by President Barack Obama to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • RedPath Integrated Pathology, Inc., a molecular diagnostics company, named Dennis Smith, Jr., M.D., chief medical officer. Smith was a senior executive and a board director at AmeriPath, Inc.
  • Scott Levin, M.D., was appointed chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. Levin was a professor of both orthopaedic and plastic surgery, as well as the chief of the division of plastic, maxillofacial and oral surgery at Duke University School of Medicine.

  • Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, in Hazleton, Pa., named Elizabeth Perrong vice president of human resources. She was vice president of human resources at Saint Catherine Healthcare in Ashland, Pa.
  • Cyberonics, Inc., a medical device company, appointed Bryan Olin vice president of quality. Olin was senior director of quality assurance at Zeltiq Aesthetics.

  • AVI BioPharma, Inc. appointed Paul Medeiros senior vice president of business development and chief business officer. He was vice president of global licensing and strategic alliances at Schering-Plough Corp.
  • UnitedHealthcare, Inc. named Donald Giancursio CEO of its Nevada health plan operations. Giancursio was senior vice president of sales and marketing at Sierra Health Services, Inc.

  • Alegro Health Corp., a vendor of medical, surgical and disability management services, appointed Peter Walkey chief financial officer (CFO). Walkey was CFO at Canada-based Priszm Income Fund.
  • Altair Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, named Joel Martin president and CEO. Martin was a partner at Forward Ventures.

  • Eclipsys Corp., which makes software for the health care industry, named Philip M. Pead CEO. Pead was CEO at Per-Se Technologies Inc.
  • Orion Health, Inc., a developer of clinical workflow and integration technology for electronic health records, appointed Anna Theriault vice president of alliances for Orion Health North American, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Theriault was health care services sales lead at Cisco Systems Inc.

  • Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corp. promoted Deborah Leonetti to president of Integra Surgical, which is part of Integra's medical instrument business. Leonetti was chief marketing officer.
  • CareFusion Corp., the company that will go public after the planned spinoff of Cardinal Health's clinical and medical products businesses, named Edward Borkowski chief financial officer (CFO). Borkowski was CFO at pharmaceutical company Mylan, Inc.

May 13, 2009

  • HHS Sec. Kathleen Sebelius said May 11 that Jeanne Lambrew will head the HHS Office of Health Reform and that Michael Hash will serve as a senior adviser. Lambrew was a former Clinton administration official at the Office of Management and Budget, and Hash was a former deputy administrator of CMS.
  • The New Jersey Association of Health Plans appointed Sarah McLallen vice president. McLallen was chief of staff at the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute.

  • Bausch & Lomb promoted Peter Valenti III to corporate vice president and global president of vision care, effective July 1. He was president of the company's North America vision care unit.
  • Ikano Therapeutics Inc. appointed Patrick Fabbio chief financial officer. Fabbio was senior director of U.S. life-cycle management and base business at sanofi-aventis.

  • Lakeside Health System, in Brockport, N.Y., promoted Michael Stapleton to CEO. He was chief operating officer (COO) and before that chief nursing officer.
  • Amherst, Mass.-based Meritain Health named Anne DeFusco president and COO. DeFusco was chief administrative officer at UnitedHealth Group's AmeriChoice subsidiary.

  • Casenet, Inc., a developer of care management software tools, appointed Bill Wisotzkey vice president of product management and design. Wisotzkey was general manager at IntrinsiQ, a Waltham, Mass.-based provider of oncology electronic medical records and data analytics.
  • Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, in Worcester, Mass., named Valerie Veridiano, M.D., chief of internal medicine. Veridiano earned her medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, and completed her residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

  • The law firm of Foley Hoag LLP named Lindsey Toohey health policy specialist. Toohey was senior health policy advisor to Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.)
  • Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho, appointed Norman Stephens CEO. Stephens was CEO at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska.

  • Medicaid plan Molina Healthcare of Florida named David Pollack chief operating officer. Pollack was vice president of portfolio operations at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
  • Pfizer Inc. hired Freda Lewis-Hall as chief medical officer (CMO). Lewis-Hall was CMO at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc.

  • Pharmacy Systems Inc., a hospital pharmacy management and consulting firm, named Michael McCarrell regional vice president. McCarrell oversaw The Ohio State University Medical Center's daily operations in pharmacy for purchasing, inventory management and automation.
  • WellMed Medical Management, a health insurer, appointed Herman Wright Jr., senior vice president of sales and marketing. From 2003 to 2005, he was a senior vice president and emerging markets officer at Health Net of California. In recent years, he focused on businesses outside of health care, including ranching and filmmaking.

  • Sierra Tucson, a treatment center for addictions, behavioral disorders and chronic pain, promoted Nancy Jarrell to clinical director. Jarrell has served as assistant clinical director since September 2006 and, most recently, as interim clinical director.
  • Iowa Gov. Chet Culver (D) appointed Charles Krogmeier director of the Iowa Department of Human Services. Krogmeier was chief of staff in the governor's office.

  • Kathleen Sebelius was sworn in April 29 as secretary of HHS. Sebelius was governor of Kansas and a former state insurance commissioner.
  • Prime Therapeutics LLC said Timothy Dickman, president and CEO, left the company to "pursue other interests" effective April 23. Kim Mageau, senior vice president and chief operating officer, will serve as interim president and CEO. Dickman had been president and CEO since 2002.

  • St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic, a non-profit family practice clinic that provides medical care to low-income, uninsured residents in Spartanburg, S.C., promoted Patsy Whitney to CEO. Whitney was chief operating officer.
  • El Paso, Texas-based Sierra Medical Center named Francisco Rodriguez, M.D., chief of staff. Rodriguez had been practicing in El Paso since 2000.

  • CareCentrix, a home health care benefits management company, appointed William Kerr, M.D., chief medical officer; Robert LaGalia, chief growth officer; and Alison K. Gilligan, Esq., chief counsel. Kerr was chief medical officer at WellCare Health Plans Inc., LaGalia was president of Magellan Health Services' radiology benefits management business, and Gilligan was co-founder and CEO at VeriMedx, Inc., an early-stage geriatric disease management company.
  • RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp., a biopharmaceutical company, appointed Richard Chin, M.D., to its board of directors. Chin is CEO at OneWorld Health, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company that develops drugs for diseases in developing countries.
  • OPKO Health, Inc., a specialty health care company, named Alice Lin-Tsing Yu, M.D., a director. Yu serves as a professor of pediatrics for both the National Taiwan University and University of California in San Diego.

  • InfuSystem, a developer of ambulatory infusion pumps and associated clinical services, hired Bryan Russo as chief commercial officer of the company. Russo was regional vice president of sales at Gentiva Health Services, Inc., a home health care company.
  • InTouch Health, a vendor of telepresence robots for the health care market, named Gerry Popolow vice president of clinical services and account management. Popolow was chief nursing officer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

  • Natividad Medical Center, in Salinas, Calif., promoted Gary Gray, M.D., to chief medical officer. Gray was chief of staff of the 172-bed acute-care medical center.
  • DaVita Inc., a kidney care services company, appointed John Schaeffler senior vice president of federal legislative affairs. He was senior manager of government relations at GE Healthcare.

  • Halfpenny Technologies, Inc., a health information exchange company, appointed Jerry Baker CEO. Baker was president and CEO of MRO Corp., an electronic medical record services vendor.
  • The Via Christi Wichita Health Network, in Kansas, promoted Anita Mills to director of pediatrics and pediatric intensive care. Mills was staff nurse and relief charge nurse in the trauma surgical intensive care unit.

  • Vantia Therapeutics, a company that develops novel small molecule drugs in Southampton, England, appointed Rachel Morten head of regulatory affairs. Morton was an independent regulatory affairs consultant.
  • Biovail Corp. named Fred Nicklas vice president of U.S. commercial operations at BTA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Nicklas was senior director of epilepsy marketing at Valeant Pharmaceuticals.

  • Bravo Health, a Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicaid plan, hired Mark Puente as senior vice president of Medicaid. Puente was CEO of AMERIGROUP Maryland Inc.
  • UCare, a nonprofit MA plan, named Alan Heaton, Pharm.D., pharmacy director. Heaton was director of pharmacy at BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota.

  • San Antonio-based Baptist Health System promoted Graham Reeve to chief operating officer. Reeve was president of St. Luke's Baptist Hospital, which is part of the health system.
  • HHS named Henry Claypool director of the Office on Disability. Claypool was policy director at Independence Care System, a managed long-term care provider in New York City.

  • UCare hired Becky J. Taylor as group Medicare sales representative in Minnesota. Taylor was an individual and Medicare field account executive at HealthPartners.
  • Carlisle Regional Medical Center, in Carlisle, Pa., named Angela Marchi interim CEO. She was CEO at Easton Hospital in Easton, Pa.

  • Medical Mutual of Ohio appointed Patrick J. Dugan chief legal officer and executive vice president. Dugan was lead outside counsel to Medical Mutual's general counsel and board of directors with the law firm Squire Sanders.
  • Brian Sweet, chief pharmacy officer at WellPoint, Inc., was named president-elect of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy. Sweet's term as president will begin April 2010.

  • Kaiser Permanente promoted Jed Weissberg, M.D., senior vice president of quality and care delivery excellence. He was associate executive director of quality and performance improvement for The Permanente Federation.
  • ThermoGenesis Corp., a supplier of products that process and store adult stem cells, named Melville "Mel" Engle CEO. Matthew Plavan, who has served as the company's interim CEO since December, has become chief operating officer. Engle was CEO at Raydiance Inc., a laser technology company.

April 15, 2009

  • Health and wellness company American Specialty Health Inc. named Dawn Garcia associate vice president of health plan sales. Garcia was regional vice president of national account sales at CareAllies, which is now CIGNA Health Solutions.
  • David Bartholomew was appointed president of Franklin, Tenn.-based health care recruiter HCCA International. Bartholomew was founder and CEO at Nashville-based Staffmark.
