Health outcomes deteriorate and costs increase dramatically when infants are born even just a few weeks before a full-term 37-week pregnancy. That's why health insurers are focusing significant efforts on maternity management programs. In fact, a recent study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that a baby born just three weeks early incurs 10 times the expense of a baby carried to term. Premature infants often suffer from respiratory distress syndrome, anemia, jaundice and other conditions, leading to admission to neonatal intensive care units. The most successful maternity management programs help ensure all mothers have a healthy pregnancy, and direct special attention to those found to be high-risk, to prevent preterm delivery and other complications. In this 90-minute program, executives from two health plans that have been pioneers in maternity management AMERIGROUP Corp. and ConnectiCare, Inc. describe how they designed and implemented maternity management programs, and the health and cost outcomes they have achieved. Both programs were built from the ground up, but AMERIGROUP has an exclusive focus on Medicaid and other state-sponsored programs, while ConnectiCare's program primarily serves commercial members.
