The U.S. spent $75 billion in 2003 to treat obesity and related conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which estimates that one-third of Americans are obese and another third are overweight. SUE BINDER, RN, CCM, PAHM is director of the health and wellness education program at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. She directs nine in-house member-focused disease management programs using multidisciplinary care specialists (population-based case managers) as the foundation for member and provider interventions. Ms. Binder has more than 30 years of highly successful and diversified professional experience in the health care industry. She previously headed her own consulting firm, Integrated Healthcare Consultants, LLC, specializing in provider-based case management. BONNIE SECHRIST, RN, BSN is director of clinical programs at Health Management Corp. (HMC). She is responsible for the overall management and clinical evaluation of all health management programs at HMC, and leads the development of disease management programs for HMC focused on diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory management. Ms. Sechrist, who joined HMC in 1997, has a diverse background in health care, ranging from research coordinator at the University of Virginia to a position directing cardiovascular services at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and Mary Washington Hospital.
