The U.S. spent $75 billion in 2003 to treat obesity and related conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which estimates that one-third of Americans are obese and another third are overweight. Obesity also contributes to other high-cost chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

As the prevalence of obesity and related conditions — and their associated medical costs — continues to grow, employers and other purchasers are looking for ways to help enrollees more effectively manage their weight.

On the government side, CMS recently opened the way for coverage of obesity in the Medicare program, and now is evaluating possible treatments.

Disease management companies and health insurers have begun introducing programs aimed at helping to treat obesity and metabolic syndrome, a condition affecting 47 million Americans that includes obesity, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and related conditions) and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Hear executives from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and Health Management Corp. (HMC) will describe groundbreaking new programs that address the obesity epidemic. You'll get all the details of how:

  • Horizon developed its weight management health education program using internal resources. The program has been available to the insurer's 180,000 HMO enrollees since summer 2004. Enrollees are placed in prevention programs and receive telephonic contact from a nurse, dietitian, social worker or other staff member who offers health coaching, such as nutrition counseling, exercise education and other issues.
  • In January 2005, HMC announced the addition of metabolic syndrome as a core chronic condition managed through its Healthy Returns disease management program. The Richmond, Va.-based health and disease management company is offering the new program to employers, health insurers and government entities across the U.S. The Healthy Returns disease management program utilizes a primary nurse care manager model which centers on the development of an individualized intervention plan (to address each program participant's health needs. This model is widely recognized for its ability to improve compliance with the physician's plan of care, generate a dramatic improvement in health care outcomes and control costs.

Find out…

  • How Horizon and HMC developed their programs, including design and delivery details
  • Lessons learned in building these two programs, including how to identify potential candidates and find needed data
  • How HMC markets its program to purchasers
  • How Horizon will expand its program to other enrollees
  • How success is being measured, including projected return on investment

Managers throughout your organization will learn details of groundbreaking new programs that address the obesity epidemic.
