Innovative Oncology Partnerships: How to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies

With the low-hanging fruit now gone, health plans and physicians are looking for new ways to achieve specialty pharmacy cost efficiencies without sacrificing patient care.  Increasingly, they are realizing that payers and providers have many challenges in common, and that great potential benefits can accrue when they work together more closely. The pharmaceutical pipeline is bulging with these potentially life-saving yet pricey specialty therapies, so insurers and providers are under increasing pressure to find effective ways they can collaborate. Find out which strategies they are using to improve clinical outcomes and increase efficiencies together.

Just a few short years ago health plans were fairly “hands off” when physicians prescribed specialty therapies. And it was not merely a matter of deferring to the physician. For many plans, a majority of their specialty drug costs fall under the medical benefit, which makes them extremely difficult to track and manage.

But as specialty drug costs have skyrocketed, and been such a major component of overall cost increases, plans have taken a far more aggressive approach to managing these drugs. At the same time, providers who have seen their drug margins erode have become more willing to work together with payers to find the most effective way to treat patients.

Hear from a team of experts — two consultants and a payer and provider who are working together — as they outline effective strategies that can be used to improve oncology outcomes and increase efficiencies. You will get all the details of:

  • Why the time is right today to establish these partnerships.
  • What the best models are for payer-provider collaborations.
  • How safety issues/concerns with erythropoiesis stimulating agents played a role in one partnership.
  • How to drive collaborative efforts and best practices through aligning insurer medication policies and physician standing orders.
  • Incentives that can enhance an organization’s flexibility and willingness to work together.
  • The role that electronic medical records can play to increase efficiencies
