Five AIS Writers Win Prestigious Awards in Major Competition

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2007 — Atlantic Information Services, Inc. (AIS), a leading health industry publisher of business news, data and strategic information, is pleased to announce that five of its writers won awards from the Specialized Information Publishers Foundation (SIPF), which represents thousands of newsletters and specialized publications. SIPF awards draw hundreds of entries annually from exceptional journalists worldwide.

AIS's Inside Consumer-Directed Care Managing Editor Steve Davis won first place in the “instructional reporting” category for his August 2006 article “Quirks, Glitches and Snafus: CDH Design Issues to Address Before Enrollment Season.” Triggered by an e-mail from an enrollee who was frustrated that neither his employer nor his insurer could solve problems he was experiencing with his CDH plan, Davis launched an investigation to both resolve the enrollee’s problems and determine how widespread similar CDH plan-design bugs were. This is the second consecutive year in which Davis has won a SIPF award.

The editorial team of Susan Namovicz-Peat and Iris Barnor won second place for “best directory or database,” with AIS’s Directory of Health Plans: 2006. This resource provides data for all types of health plans, publishes timely data rather than two-year-old similar directories in the field, and uses a data-gathering methodology that relies on traditional journalistic methods rather than telemarketing services, list purchase, or outdated public or government data sources.

Nina Youngstrom, managing editor of AIS's Report on Medicare Compliance since 1992, won third place for "best spot news" for her on-deadline reporting of a compliance officer being sentenced to six years in prison for his role in marketing an unapproved instrument sterilizer to hospitals. After an initial tip from the president of the Health Care Compliance Assn., Youngstrom’s reporting included interviews with the prosecutor and a defense attorney from the case, and in-depth research on not only the indictment but also the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s documents on its investigation. This is the third year in a row that Youngstrom has won an award in this category.

A Guide to the Medicare Drug Benefit Managing Editor Barbra Golub took third place honors in the “best reference publication” category, for turning thousands of pages of federal Medicare regulations, preambles, statutory language and guidance into an easy-to-read reference on the Medicare drug benefit approved by Congress in 2003.

The awards were announced at the annual conference of the Specialized Information Publishers Association in Washington, D.C., on June 5, 2007.
